THE OTTB CHALLANGE

Are you ready for the OTTB Challenge? Here are some things to keep in mind when looking into buying your off track Thoroughbred:
-Ask yourself if a thoroughbred is right for you. All horses are different, even horses of the same breed. In general Thoroughbreds are athletic, sensitive and willing. Sometimes this is seen as high energy, spooky or hot. When you take on an OTTB you learn how to communicate to your horse with new words, teaching your horse a new language. If you are not ready for this type of work you might want to think twice.
-Have your trainer be involved every step of the way. Your trainer knows how you ride and what kind of horse you can handle. They will also know how to find you the right horse for your needs. Success comes when everyone works together rather then against each other.
-Be OK with let down time. The majority of race horses are kept in a stall at all times, only going out when exercising and racing. After you bring your horse home plenty of let down time should be allowed. Turn out will o good for him mentally and physically. If you are in a rush to get on and jump courses then an ottb is not for you!
-Ask for medical information. Asking plenty of questions about the horse’s health when looking at prospects is very important. Having a horse vetted out before you buy will help be confirming your decision or avoiding a bad one. If the trainer will not allow the horse to be vetted think carefully about purchasing the horse, even if the price is low.
From the horses I have sold I have heard nothing but success. Buying an ottb is an exciting commitment that challenges you as a horseman. Over and over I say Thoroughbreds are the most wonderful horses and now I am starting to hear it from other people who are realizing the same thing. Are you ready to be apart of the ottb community?
